Heavy Drinkers Outlive Non-Drinkers

(CBS) Drink up… that is if you want to live a few years longer.

That’s the highly unusual conclusion of a new study which suggests that non-drinkers die sooner than heavy drinkers. Moderate drinkers fair the best.

The paper, which appears in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, took a look at 1,824 participants over 20 years, according to Time.com. Sixty-three percent of them were men.

Scientists, led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin, filtered out “socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support,” according to the site, and still found that nondrinkers just don’t live as long as their drinking compatriots. Over the 20-year period, 69 percent of the nondrinkers died, 60 percent of the heavy drinkers died and only 41 percent of the moderate drinkers died.

Moderate drinking, according to Time, was defined as one to three drinks per day.

The findings are certainly confusing, since heavy drinking can lead to liver failure, mouth cancer and heart problems. And being a drunk can ruin friendships, career and family.

Still, as odd as it may seem, the old saying, “drink to your health,” may be wise after all. [Credit: CBSNews]

Copenhagen Wheel Makes Any Bicycle Electric

At press time their website had not yet been updated with this news, but the 2010 James Dyson Award has announced their US National Winner, along with the US Shortlist.

Top prize goes to MIT’s SENSEable City Lab for their Copenhagen Wheel design, a sort of smart wheel that attaches to existing bicycles and transforms them into “hybrid electric-bikes with regeneration and real-time sensing capabilities.”

Its sleek red hub not only contains a motor, batteries and an internal gear system – helping cyclists overcome hilly terrains and long distances – but also includes environmental and location sensors that provide data for cycling-related mobile applications. Cyclists can use this data to plan healthier bike routes, to achieve their exercise goals or to create new connections with other cyclists. Through sharing their data with friends or their city, they are also contributing to a larger pool of information from which the whole community can benefit.

Amazing Photos of Stormy Skies

In the past several months, powerful storms have wreaked havoc in many places, torrential rains in central Europe and parts of China, tornadoes in Australia, Montana and the American Midwest, and strong thunderstorms across the northeast. Now, as Tropical Storm Bonnie makes landfall in Florida and heads into the Gulf of Mexico, oil cleanup is being suspended, and the final “kill” operation is delayed for at least one more week. These storms have been destructive and deadly, but beautiful and awe-inspiring at the same time. Collected here are a handful of photographs of stormy skies, lightning strikes and storm damage from the past several months.

Adjustable High Heels – Comfort & Fashion

The high-heeled shoe is a classic example of a no pain, no gain product. Women wearing them take so much trouble for granted! I decided to challenge this compromise. Would it be possible to make a shoe having all advantages of high heels, just as well as the comfort of flats I designed a shoe with a high heel, which can be changed into a shoe with a low heel. No more extra pairs of shoes in your bag, no more trouble driving a car or walking stairs, no more painful feet, no more knee and ankle damage For such a product to be a serious alternative for regular heels it has to be mechanically and ergonomical-ly sound, and moreover: it has to have allure!

The character of this shoe is in the heel shape. It has separate tips for both positions. While being used in one position, the other heel tip is kept out of sight in and opening in the sole. The shoe is being transformed with a simple and quick movement: one just pulls the heel downwards to release it, after which it can be folded in or out as preferred. The adjustment of the heel position automatically changes the curvature of the sole to fit the altered shape of the foot. This mechanism has been patented.

The truth of the matter is that weighing dogs & luggage on a domestic weigh machine is cumbersome to the point of being impractical. So what’s the solution? Fashion – DIY Denim Cuff Shorts

Something that really irks me is that shorts and jeans cost the exact same price. What the fudge?! Shorts (for girls at least) are no where near the same amount of fabric! Other than the fact that shorts are so overpriced, I have serious problems finding a pair that actually fits since I have some junk in the trunk. So what did I do? I took action. I got these Calvin Klein jeans in great condition from my local thrift store for $4. When picking out a pair of jeans, make sure you try them on! There’s no point buying a pair that doesn’t fit. I would suggest going up at least a pant size (especially if the fabric is stretchy) because cuff shorts look better if they’re a little loose. Remember that the jeans are going to stretch out eventually though, so don’t go too big, just loose.

These jeans were boot cut. Like I said, this pair was in really great condition so it was kind of hard chopping them up, but luckily they were a little short so my choice was made for me. What you want to do is put the jeans on and make a line with a pen or chalk just above your knee cap. This will ensure that you don’t cut off too much.

I found it was easiest to cut the jeans with the back pockets folded with front pockets out since these jeans have a button back pocket. You can cut both legs together and accuracy doesn’t need to be perfect since this isn’t the final cut. (Side note: I used a yellow clothes line clip to hold the pants together, but it’s not necessary).

Next you want to put the jeans back on and try to cuff the jeans. You’re probably going to have trouble since woman’s jeans are designed to be pretty form fitting. I wanted mine relatively short so I made another mark about 2 inches up and then took them off and cut them. This time you cut them one leg at a time. Once you cut the first leg you can use it as a guide for the second leg to keep them relatively even (it doesn’t matter too much since you’re going to be cuffing them anyway). I like mine rolled up twice and relatively skinny, but it’s a personal preference. Once you figure out how you like it you can either sew up the sides with a sewing maching or by hand or you can just leave it raw. I want to stretch mine out a little more before I decide on how my cuffs are going to be permanently, so I decided to sew them up later. Hint: a good way to stretch out pants is to put them on and tug at them.

Here’s the final product! It took me all of 10 minutes, so don’t be afraid. Go make you own pair! Let me know how they turn out!

Learning About Bokeh

In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image, or “the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light” (source). It’s often most visible around lights in your image background, but blur actually occurs in any out-of-focus areas in your images.
