Origami That’s Sure to Blow Your Mind

These paper creations laugh mockingly at the swan or flower you used to create in study hall. Some are remarkably creative and some are mind-boggling in their complexity. These origami masterpieces are marvels!

Origami Master: Taking over 40 hours to fold, which was spread out over several months, Satoshi Kamiya from Japan produced this eight-inch-tall Eastern dragon (or ryuu in Japanese) with a thousand overlapping scales.

This origami Yoda even captures his famous wrinkles, but where is his lightsaber?

Castle on the Ocean: Wataru Ito, an origami artist from Japan, spent four years creating this model city named Castle on the Ocean. This 2.4 meter by 1.8 meter by 1 meter high city went on display at an exhibition on the artificial island of Umihotaru, near Tokyo, Japan. Plans for the display after the exhibition? Mr. Ito plans to burn the paper city down.

This origami swan was made from approximately 500 pieces of paper. If this was a living swan, it would have over 25,000 feathers covering its body!

Iron Man Light: Origami artist, Brian Chan constructed this origami model of Iron Man from only one piece of paper.

This American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) was designed and folded by Michael LaFosse and Richard Alexander. Featured in the Origami Now! exhibition at the Peabody/Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts this origami ‘gator measured a full 6 feet in length!

Vroom! Yes, this model of a V-12 four-stroke engine actually runs! With the help of electrical wires, swtiches, a resistor, a motor and a battery holder, this engine moves just like a real one. Taking over 4 years to design and build, this origami engine was constructed out of 1,978 pieces of paper and weighs 3.2 lbs.

Rain, rain go away: While these outfits show some amazing origami skills, these ladies should probably stay indoors and away from open flames! This French collection, complete with dainty little hats, is defnitely more art than functional clothing.

These three figurines were inspired by The Lord of the Rings characters. Each model was made from only one sheet of uncut paper.

Dan McPharlin, a native of Adelaide, Australia uses his artistic skills to exercise his passion for classic vintage synthesizers. Mr. McPharlin uses paper of different colors and forms to create the keys, knobs, and faders of miniature model synthesizers reminiscent of those electronics of the 1970s made by Moog, Korg, ARP Instruments and Roland.

Palicio del marques de Salamanca is a model by Ingrid Siliakus, a paper artist/architect from the Netherlands who specializes in models of classic architecture.

Won Park, a self-proclaimed “money folder”, created this koi fish out of an American one dollar bill.

All Terrain Armored Transport: The AT-AT is the large, four-legged walker introduced in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back during the Battle of Hoth.

This is probably more bookmark than anyone needs! Created for a bookstore in the Czech Repulic, this papercraft delivered a powerful message for a series of advertisements to promote reading to children.

No Ugly Duckling: This beautiful swan took around 2 weeks to fold and build.

French origami master Eric Joisel made this snail out of one piece of wet-folded rectangular paper.

If you are a car enthusiastic, then you should get this for your bathroom. Designer Shen Di has come up with +Shifter faucet that will give you the feel of a luxury car in your bathroom. The +Shifter faucet uses the perception of a car’s gearbox to change how much water we use. Instead of changing gear ratios, each position correlates to how much water flows out.

When you’ve got a watch on your wrist, you’re constantly saying something about yourself. That’s changed since the beginning of watches. When wrist watches were first invented, you definitely said something about your identity when you wore one. Then there was a long period when everyone had one – it was standard to have one. Now, in this age of pocket-sitting clocks on mobile phones, again the age of wrist clock fashion is born. Curve ID knows this.

What Curve ID presents here is two different wrist watches, both of them for the NIKE corporation. You’ll see the lighter-gray watch that goes by then name Triax Mia, very sassy, then there’s the Vapor 300 which boasts the market’s largest curved LED screen. How about that?

Yuji Fujimura | ver2 Electric Bike Concept

Industrial designer Yuji Fujimura has developed a unique concept bike utilizing an lithium-ion battery. This means that the bike is rechargeable as well as reliable for long term use. The ver2 battery will provide power to the motor, so that this bike can be used as an electric bike or electric motor cycle. When ver2 is in motor cycle mode, both pedals will set themselves at the lowest position. One of our favorite aspects is that the battery also serves as a power source to the any gadgets stored in the compartment located underneath the seat. Easily recharge your laptop,cellphone, ipod or any other electronic gadgets you decide to embark with. Fujimura also designed the handles, pedals and seat to be foldable so the ver2 can fit in very narrow spaces making it convenient to park. More images after the jump!

Beirut’s Most Fabulous Wine Bar

I don’t generally like to rate a restaurant or bar without having been there to taste their rootbeer, but this looks amazing. This is “Burgundy” wine bar/restaurant, Beirut – Lebanon. Look at those lights! Hanging near wooden beams that slice through a wire mesh covering the ceiling, these light objects are made up of conical tubes filling a hypothetical spherical area. Under the lights, a substructure divided into one area for the bar and another for dining.

The lights are meant to recall chandeliers, the cluster of tubes shooting from the center creating the effect of singular light sources being filtered in oh-such a pretty way. In a similar vein, the entryway is lit by a set of black projectors.

It’s interesting to design a bar or restaurant, I’d imagine, since unless you’re working on a kid-centric establishment, you’ve gotta be ever-so-slight with your expression. Food-centric! .PSLAB rocks it.

Style – 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible

Bentley has dropped the details on its newest creation ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show, and claims that it’s produced the world’s fastest four-seat convertible and the quickest drop-top Bentley in the automaker’s history.

The 2011 Bentley Continental Supersports Convertible is the soft-top sibling to the marque’s latest coupe, packing the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 as the hard-top and putting out 621 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Also like the fixed roof variant, the Supersports Convertible can run on either gasoline or E85, returning a 0-60 mph run of 3.9 seconds and a top speed on 202 mph no matter what fuel you choose to top up with.

Other carryovers include the all-wheel drive system and ZF-sourced six-speed automatic that sends power to four, 20-inch, 10-spoke wheels shod in high-performance Pirelli rubber (275/35Z R20). However, unlike the hard-top, the rear seats remain, along with carbon fiber buckets and matching trim, Alcantara and a host of interior amenities.

Bentley hasn’t released pricing on the Supersports Convertible yet, but considering the coupe starts around $270,000, you and three friends can share the $300k tab when it goes on sale this summer. Press release after the jump. [Credit: Autoblog]

Dual-Rotor Road Warrior Turned Helo

Just after the new year, DARPA put out a broad agency announcement requesting a flying car, specifically a one-to four-person, vertical takeoff and landing-capable vehicle that can negotiate off-road conditions as well as take to the skies. Today, Fort Worth-based AVX Aircraft has responded with a proposal, releasing some mock-ups of a dual-rotor, ducted-fan driven aircraft that’s also road-ready.

AVX’s Transformer Candidate Takes to the Sky AVX Aircraft

AVX says the four-seater will be able to carry a 1,040-lb. payload 250 miles on a single tank of fuel, peaking at 80 miles per hour over land and 140 miles per hour on land. It’s coaxial rotor design would certainly satisfy the vertical take-off and landing requirement, and at least the sketches make it look off-road rugged. Unfolding the rotor blades for flight should convert the vehicle from road warrior to aircraft in just one minute.

Of course, sketches are only sketches and it will be interesting to see if AVX can flesh this design out into a practical battlefield vehicle that reliably complies with the written laws of physics and the unwritten practicalities of combat. But as concepts go this one is pretty cool. Feel free to pull the pic above into Photoshop and add the air-to-surface armaments of your choice. [Credit: Popsci]
